Conscription is the term for compulsory military service. Historically, conscription has been a politically divisive issue, splitting Canada along linguistic and cultural lines. In 1917, PM Borden introduced conscription, effectively losing the support of Québec. PM King, in 1944, managed to institute conscription at a lesser political cost.
